The Etna tours sold on GetYourGuide look alike in their photos, but they are very different days. Some walk for three or four hours at 3,000 m, some reach the rim of a summit crater, and some stay on old craters near 2,000 m with a lava cave and a tasting. A few include the lift tickets; most do not.
This guide sets the eleven tours from the homepage side by side, plus three more from the north side, Syracuse and the wine country. How hard each one feels is in how hard the Etna hike is, and what the cable car gives you on its own is in the guide to the Etna cable car.
The quick answer
Best all-round: the guided summit hike (4.7 from 6,028 reviews), lift ticket paid on the day. Most walking for the lifts: the 3,000 m trek, about 3 to 4 hours on foot. A real hike with no lifts: the trek beyond the tourist trails, about 550 m of ascent to roughly 2,400 m (4.9). Highest crater rims: the Bocca Nuova trek (about 3,300 m) and the Central Crater trek, about 2 hours up from 2,800 m, when the alert level allows. Quieter north side: the summit trek from Piano Provenzana (4.9). Not summit hikes: the easy crater walk (max about 2,100 m), the sunset walk and the Taormina morning trek, all near 2,000 m. Lift tickets included: only the cable car, 4x4 bus and guide package from Catania (4.3). Every tour here: full refund if you cancel up to 24 hours ahead.
Which is the best Etna tour?
For most visitors, the guided summit hike from Rifugio Sapienza: it is the most booked, it has a volcanological guide, and it goes as high as the volcano allows that day. Fit walkers who dislike lifts should look at the trek beyond the tourist trails instead.
The Etna Guided Summit Hike up to 3,400 m has 4.7 from 6,028 reviews and lasts 5 hours. You choose between two options: the 3,000 m trek, with the cable car to 2,500 m and then on foot across recent lava flows to the Barbagallo craters, or the summit trek towards 3,400 m with the cable car and 4x4. A helmet and insurance are included, there is an optional pickup from Catania, and the lift ticket is paid on site.
The Etna Trek Beyond the Tourist Trails is the highest rated of the longer hikes, 4.9 from 1,819 reviews. It uses no cable car at all: a naturalist guide leads you from about 1,850 m past the Silvestri craters and the 2001 lava flow to roughly 2,400 m, about 550 m of ascent in a 7-hour day with pickup in Catania.

The most booked way up Etna: cable car to 2,500 m, then on foot with a volcanological guide to the 3,000 m craters or the summit area when the volcano allows. Helmet and insurance included. Rated 4.7 from 6,028 reviews.
Explore the guided summit hikeHow do the Etna tours compare side by side?
Four tours aim for the summit area, two stop around 3,000 m or below on the high slopes, and five stay low with easy walks, caves and tastings. Only one includes the lift tickets.
Ratings and review counts are GetYourGuide figures on 1 October 2026. Highest points are the most a tour can reach on a good day; the guide decides on the day according to the alert level and the weather. "Lift ticket" means the cable car and 4x4 ride bought at the meeting point.

Etna summit tour or crater walk: which should you choose?
Choose a summit tour if you are reasonably fit and want the high craters, steam and the views from about 3,000 m. Choose a crater walk if you are travelling with children, have heart or breathing problems, or simply want an easy half day on the volcano.
The summit tours are high-altitude hikes in thin air, wind and loose volcanic sand. The Etna Trek to 3,000 m with Cable Car and 4x4 (4.6 from 4,691 reviews) takes the lifts to about 2,800 m and then walks for about 3 to 4 hours past the Barbagallo craters, inside a lava channel and down the sand to a viewpoint over the Valle del Bove. It is honest work: if you are unfit or have breathing problems, you will find it hard. The Summit Craters Trek with a Volcano Guide (4.7 from 2,021 reviews) goes on to the Central Crater rim, about 2 hours up from 2,800 m, for moderately trained hikers.
The crater walks are a different product. Etna Craters, Lava Cave and Tasting from Catania has 4,396 reviews and stays at a maximum of about 2,100 m; the listing itself says it does not include the summit or the cable car. It suits families with young children and older people. It is a lovely day, but it is not a summit hike.

Save your legs for the good part: cable car and 4x4 to about 2,800 m, then 3 to 4 hours on foot to the Barbagallo craters, with boots, helmet and jacket lent.
Check dates for the 3,000 m trek with cable car and 4x4Etna south or north: which side is better for a tour?
The south side, from Rifugio Sapienza, has the cable car and most of the tours. The north side, from Piano Provenzana, has no cable car, fewer people and 4x4 tracks up to about 2,900 m.
Rifugio Sapienza sits at about 1,900 m above Nicolosi. The Funivia dell'Etna lifts you to 2,500 m, the 4x4 buses go on towards 2,900 m, and the guides' offices are around the square. That is where the summit hike, the 3,000 m trek, the Bocca Nuova trek and the Central Crater trek begin.
Piano Provenzana, at about 1,800 m above Linguaglossa, is greener and quieter. The Summit Trek from Etna North (4.9 from 591 reviews) takes an off-road 4x4 to about 2,900 m, walks to the summit area, and comes down through sand gullies to Pizzi Deneri above the Valle del Bove. The Piano Provenzana Hike to 3,380 m (4.7 from 68 reviews) is a longer walk of about 470 m up from 2,925 m, but it needs at least 8 participants and can be cancelled if fewer book. Guides sometimes move a group from one side to the other when the volcano is restless, as some September 2026 reviews describe.

The wild north face of Etna: off-road 4x4 from Piano Provenzana to about 2,900 m, the summit area on foot with an alpine or volcanological guide, and a descent to Pizzi Deneri. Boots, jacket and helmet lent. Rated 4.9 from 591 reviews.
Explore the summit trek from Etna NorthIs the Etna sunset tour worth it?
Yes, if you want the light more than the height. Sunset tours walk easy old craters near 2,000 m, often add a lava cave and a tasting, and end with the sun going down over a sea of clouds. They are not summit hikes.
The Etna Sunset Walk, Lava Cave and Tasting (4.8 from 1,786 reviews) lasts 5 hours with pickup in Catania and a small group. You taste honey, olive oil and local products at a farm, go into the Grotta dei Tre Livelli lava cave with a helmet and headlamp, then walk on extinct craters and recent lava near Rifugio Sapienza, at about 1,900 to 2,000 m, as the sun sets. The easy crater tour from Catania also runs in a sunset version.
A morning tour has the advantage of clearer air: clouds often build over the summit after midday. A sunset tour has the colour, and during an eruption you may see a glow from the summit, but lava is never guaranteed. Bring a warm layer either way: it turns cold quickly at 2,000 m once the sun has gone.

Which Etna tour should you book from Catania, Taormina or Syracuse?
From Catania you can choose almost any tour, because most pickups start there. From Taormina, book a tour with pickup in town; from Syracuse, the dedicated morning hike with transfer is the simplest choice.
Catania is about 35 km from Rifugio Sapienza, so most tours pick up there: the trek beyond the tourist trails, the easy crater tour, the sunset walk, the lift-included package and the summit hike with its optional pickup. The Full-Day Etna and Wine Tour from Catania (4.9 from 190 reviews) adds Etna DOC wine at a winery to the craters and a lava cave.
From Taormina, the Etna Morning Trek from Taormina (4.9 from 548 reviews) is 6.5 hours with about 1.5 to 2 hours on foot round extinct craters near 2,000 m, a lava cave and a tasting, and Etna North and the Alcantara Gorges (4.8 from 2,944 reviews) adds a basalt canyon to a low-altitude day on the north side. From Syracuse, the Etna Morning Hike and Food Tasting (4.9 from 237 reviews) is an 8-hour day with transfer. Drive times and the public bus are in getting to Etna from Catania.
From Taormina without driving: pickup near your hotel, about 1.5 to 2 hours on foot round extinct craters, a lava cave and a tasting with almond wine.
Check dates for the morning trek from TaorminaShould you book a private Etna tour or a group?
A small group is fine for most people and costs less per person. A private tour makes sense for families with young children or for travellers who want their own pace, and it costs more per person.
In the summit zone, every group is small by rule: authorised guides may take a maximum of 10 people each, all with helmets. The easy crater tour from Catania is sold both as a private tour and as a small group, in several languages. Watch the minimums: the trek beyond the tourist trails needs at least 2 participants, so solo travellers should contact the operator first, and the Piano Provenzana hike to 3,380 m needs 8.
The Summit Crater Trek to the Bocca Nuova (4.8 from 2,257 reviews) is a good example of a group that suits mixed abilities: reviewers mention a range of fitness levels in the same group and say they felt very safe. The guide sets one pace for everyone, so if you know you are much slower or much faster than average, say so when you book.

To the edge of the Bocca Nuova at about 3,300 m with a volcanologist: cable car and 4x4 to the Torre del Filosofo, 360-degree views and a descent through the 2002 craters. Boots, poles, helmet and insurance lent. Rated 4.8 from 2,257 reviews.
Explore the Bocca Nuova summit trekWhat do Etna tours include, and what costs extra?
The guide, helmet and insurance are included on the summit tours, and most lend boots and jackets. The cable car and 4x4 ticket is extra on the summit hike, the 3,000 m trek, the Bocca Nuova trek, the Central Crater trek and the north side trek; only the package from Catania includes it.
- Lift ticket on the day: bought at the meeting point, often in cash, on five of the six high tours. Bring cash for it and for the car park at Rifugio Sapienza.
- The exception: the Cable Car, 4x4 Bus and Guide package from Catania includes the transfer, the cable car, the 4x4 bus and a guide. It costs more up front and has the lowest rating on this site, 4.3 from 1,823 reviews.
- Boots: lent on the 3,000 m trek, the Bocca Nuova trek, the Central Crater trek, the north side trek and the trek beyond the tourist trails; on the summit hike, boot rental at the meeting point is extra.
- If the summit closes: the guide turns round lower or changes side; the Bocca Nuova and Central Crater treks then take the cable car only, up to the highest permitted altitude.
- Every tour here: full refund if you cancel up to 24 hours ahead.
Whether you need a guide at all on the lower trails is explained in hiking Etna without a guide.

The one package with the lift tickets already inside: transfer from Catania, the cable car, the 4x4 bus and a guide for the whole time on Etna.
Check dates for the cable car, 4x4 and guide packageFrequently asked questions
Do Etna tours include the cable car?
Most guided summit hikes do not: you buy the cable car and 4x4 ticket at the meeting point on the day, often in cash. The Cable Car, 4x4 Bus and Guide package from Catania is the one tour here that includes it.
Which Etna tour is best for children?
The easy crater tour from Catania: a drive to about 2,000 m, gentle walks round old craters up to about 2,100 m, a lava cave with a helmet and a tasting. It suits families with young children and older people.
Is any Etna tour guaranteed to reach the summit?
No. The summit zone opens and closes with the volcano's alert level, and only authorised guides may enter it. On restless days guides turn round at 3,000 m or lower, or change side.
Can I cancel an Etna tour?
Yes. Every tour in this guide gives a full refund if you cancel up to 24 hours ahead. If the operator cancels for weather or the volcano, it refunds or offers another date.
